Today I used a two-hour Metrolink pass to go from my Central West End home to the Ferguson Bicycle Shop to pick up a wedding anniversary present for my husband. When I got off the train, I rolled my bicycle down the sidewalk until it ended, and then down a steep hill through a rocky lawn to Bellerive Drive, the road that would quickly connect me to the Ted Jones trail. On returning, I took the same path in reverse: Up the steep rocky hill to the sidewalk to the train platform. It’s annoying. (The many who have traversed this hill will know exactly what I’m writing about.)
While waiting for the train, I watched a woman push a baby carriage up the steep rocky hill to the sidewalk to the train platform. I wanted to take a photo of her doing it, but frankly didn’t know how she would respond if she saw a stranger taking a photo of her. So I took the photo above after she struggled up the hill. And then the train came.
Is this a good idea that nobody has proposed to UMSL‘s powers-that-be yet? I hope so!

Whenever I bike to this MetroLink station, which is closest to my home, I get off and push my bike up this short steep stretch of path, evidently beaten down by pedestrians. Upon returning, I bike through the parking lot to get to the main campus road.
I agree that for pedestrians it would be an improvement if this path were paved. I also see the benefit of it being paved for cyclists, provided there’s no pedestrian conflict.
This might not be the ideal time to propose it but at least it might get put on the to-do list if it were. It may turn out to be a MetroLink responsibility though.
